Markets
One method. Your market's rules.
Energy Mark predicts the energy result. The band or class is then set by the formula your market publishes. Change the market, and only the rules change.
India
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
BEE runs mandatory and voluntary star labelling across dozens of equipment types. Each is tested to an Indian Standard or a BEE schedule, and bands are set by government notification.
Bands are revised periodically. For example, hard-top chest freezer bands are set by Ministry of Power notification S.O. 2521(E), June 2025, valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028.
- Mandatory labels: refrigerators, deep freezers, room and light commercial ACs, chillers, water heaters, washing machines, televisions, LED lamps, ceiling fans, distribution transformers, solar inverters, LPG stoves and induction hobs
- Voluntary labels: motors, pumps, computers, office equipment, inverters, generator sets, microwave ovens, solar water heaters, air compressors, Li-ion batteries, tyres, visi coolers, refrigerant compressors, air coolers and EV chargers
European Union
Ecodesign and energy labelling
EU product regulations set minimum efficiency and label classes for each product group. Labelled products are registered in the EPREL database.
Energy Mark applies each product group's formula and class boundaries, for example to EN 62552 test results for refrigerators and freezers.
- Cooking: ovens, hobs, range hoods
- Cleaning and drying: dishwashers, washing machines, washer-dryers, tumble dryers
- Refrigeration: fridges and freezers, commercial refrigerators, professional refrigerated cabinets
- Heating, cooling and ventilation: air conditioners and comfort fans, space heaters, water heaters, ventilation units, boilers
- Electronics: displays, smartphones, computers, power supplies, servers, game consoles
- Lighting and business-to-business products: light sources, motors, pumps, circulators, industrial fans, power transformers, welding equipment
United States
Department of Energy (DOE)
DOE sets test procedures and efficiency standards for consumer products under 10 CFR Part 430, and for commercial and industrial equipment under 10 CFR Part 431.
Commercial refrigerators and freezers are tested to ANSI/ASHRAE 72-2022.
- Consumer products: refrigerators and freezers, room and central air conditioners, heat pumps, water heaters, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, cooking products, lamps, ceiling fans, televisions, external power supplies
- Commercial and industrial equipment: commercial refrigeration, light commercial ACs, packaged boilers, electric motors, pumps, air compressors, distribution transformers
Australia and New Zealand
Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS)
Australia and New Zealand share energy rating labels and minimum standards for a range of appliances and equipment.
Refrigerators and freezers are tested to AS/NZS 4474, which follows the same underlying test method used in other markets.
- Refrigerators and freezers to AS/NZS 4474
- Other GEMS-regulated product categories
Gulf Cooperation Council
National energy efficiency labelling
UAE and Saudi Arabia run their own energy efficiency labels and minimum standards for appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators. Energy Mark applies the applicable national formula and test method.
Japan
Top Runner Program
Japan sets efficiency targets for products through the Top Runner Program. Energy Mark applies the applicable target and test method.
How ratings are applied
Each standard's formula, its band or class boundaries and the rated values it needs are held separately from the model, with the dates they apply. Every prediction records exactly which rules were applied.
When a regulator revises its bands, the new rules sit alongside the old. Predictions already made keep the rules they used, and the model does not change.
